At some point in our lives we can expect to be a family caregiver, or the receiver of care. These roles can change our relationships with others, especially in the context of Village membership. Disconnection from village activities and friendships is a danger for both the person whose health has declined, and for their family caregiver. These are naturally occurring dynamics that Villages have an opportunity to address.
A group of family caregivers at Pasadena Village has built a peer-led support group for themselves and others in their situation. A social support group lets caregivers know that they are cared for, that others can provide assistance, and that they are part of a compassionate network. The group is a lifeline for its members.
With a grant from the Rupe Foundation, Village Movement CA is partnering with the Pasadena Village Caregiver Support Group to develop a toolkit that will enable your village to address family caregiving in a meaningful way.
